Nuclear Reactor

The Nuclear Reactor is a powerful power source that takes significant resources to create, but produces large amounts of power once operational. Unlike other power sources, it takes time to warm up, and burns fuel even if nothing is connected to it so it is best used to power large bases or farms that require a steady supply of power.

To begin building a Nuclear Reactor, craft a Main Reactor Controller and place it. This block is 3 blocks wide and two long so make sure it has space to go on the ground. Once placed, the outline of the power plant will appear. Make sure you’re happy with the placement and then you can start filling in the outline with blocks.

Alongside the Main Reactor Controller, there are 11 block types that you will need to place.

  • Reactor Wall

  • Reactor Wall Top

  • Reactor Wall Corner

  • Reactor Control Rod

  • Reactor Control Panel Side

  • Reactor Item Input

  • Coolant Input (a multiblock)

  • Reactor Power Output

  • Reactor Turbine

  • Reactor Glass

  • Nuclear Reactor Warning Stripe

If you place a block in the wrong place, red particles will appear around the block. Open the Main Reactor Controller UI and it will tell you what kind of block should go there.

NOTE: Warning Stripe blocks require a long press to place on mobile devices!

Once you have placed all of the reactor’s blocks, press “START REACTOR” in the control panel UI. If the START REACTOR text is red not white, then you have issues with a block in the reactor that need to be fixed first. When the reactor is complete, it will start glowing green.

To start producing power, Use an Item Pipe to feed Uranium Rods (produced with a Uranium Refinery) into the reactor. You will also need to pump in Coolant from a Coolant Fabricator using a Fluid Pipe.

The nuclear reactor will start burning Uranium Rods but it will take a few minutes to get hot enough to produce power. You can check the UI to see the current temperature and production efficiency. Eventually the reactor will reach and remain at its optimal temperature and continue consuming Coolant and Uranium Rods.

If the reactor runs out of Coolant it will begin to overheat. The power production will  eventually stop. It will not produce any power until it receives more Coolant, or runs out of Uranium Rods to burn.

If any of the blocks in the reactor are broken while it is running, it will stop producing power and will slowly cool down over time. After repairing the reactor, press “START REACTOR” again in the UI to restart the reactor.
